How good are Rockets minus Yao Ming?

The Houston Rockets have won 17 games in a row going into tonight's game against the the New Orleans Hornets. Houston's All-Star center Yao Ming recently suffered a foot injury and is out for the rest of the season. NBA fans are wondering whether the Rockets, minus Yao, can still contend for a championship.

I'm interested in hearing what readers think will happen in the NBA playoffs. Is the loss of Yao Ming going to keep the Rockets from 'lifting off' in postseason? You tell me.

By the way, yesterday I came across a great blog about the Chinese center, which I know you will enjoy reading. The blog is called "Yao Central" and I like it a lot! Just click on the blog name, and check it out.

For eight years, the Western Conference Playoffs have come down to who can control the middle. Yao was the Rockets' ticket to that. Lots of teams succeed in the regular season despite a viable downlow presence (notably the Kings, Mavs, and Suns this decade) but they always lost to Shaq or Duncan on the way to the championship. Even the Mavs, who made the Finals two years ago, ended up losing to Shaq when he was on the Heat.

Down goes Yao... down go the Rockets in the playoffs. It'll be the Spurs, Lakers (Kobe, Gasol, Bynum) or the Suns in the Finals for the West.
